Brief History
Kintsugi is a Japanese art form that involved repairing broken pottery with gold and lacquer to highlight the damage and embrace imperfection.
The lacquer is made from a natural resin and is water resistant and durable. The repairs are time consuming and multi-step, but the end result highlights the object’s life and the imperfections that make it beautiful and vaulauble
The word kintsugi translates to ‘joining with gold’, and the practice is rooted in the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, which values simplicity and beauty in the incomplete. Kintsugi is also closely connected to Zen Buddhism.
The process of kintsugi involves:
